Normally when I sit down to write one of these articles I have an amusing anecdote that I wish to share that will enlighten you, the reader, on my life in general. This week I'm afraid something has happened, and I have discovered that I actually have something important to say - so without further ado I will attempt to explain my deep-rooted dislike of the European Union.

Compromise

I want to make it clear that I am not against Europe as a continent - I'm not even against a central administrative body. What I am severely against, however, is a large unelected body making blanket decisions for 27 separate states. Obviously the key word is 'compromise' - it is impossible to please everyone in a single decision. What I don't understand is that if single governments can't please their countries with some of their decisions, who ever thought that by widening the catchment, people would miraculously start agreeing with each other?

Vegetables

I suppose the answer to that question is that they don't have to agree because they aren't given a say. There was a story a few years back where continental Europe wanted vegetables to be regulated so there were no ugly, malformed specimens on display - the EU went with the majority and declared that vendors were not allowed to sell misshapen vegetables. This meant that if you wanted to buy a courgette it would be a nice regular shape, and also more expensive. You know what, to be honest, I'm a student, I don't mind the knobbly carrots; I don't mind if an onion has the face of Abraham Lincoln, I'm going to chop it into tiny pieces and drop it in hot oil - something I wish I could do with the Constitution.
